Palatoplasty may be a treatment option for snorers and Patients with the obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OBPS). It is recommended if the obstructive component of the sleep disturbance dominates in the polisomnography and there are no nasal blockage symptoms. In the latter, septoplasty or turbinoplasty ought to considered first. Higher success rates are in the Patients with big palatine tonsills, elongated uvula and flaccid soft palate.
Improving sleep quality helps the Patient to maintain good day concentration and work effectiveness and lowers the risk for serious diseases - arterial hypertension, heart attack or stroke.
It is done with laser or radiosurgery techniques most often.
